So...I don't think I could ever describe to you how Indonesia is!! It is 1000% different from anything you have experienced!! You should see the traffic here!! Hahaha let's just say there are a lot of cars and not really any rules...
I am in Tangerang! Go Google it because I don't have any pictures....sorry, I'll do better this week! My Trainer is amazing!! His name is Elder Wood and he has been out about a year and a couple months and he really knows what's going on around here!
I know I felt confident about the language before coming here, but being here only a week...let's just say remember in The Best Two Years where the Greenie asks what language they are speaking and his companion says "That's Dutch" and he replies, "Well, that's not what they taught me in the MTC!!" Yeah.... that's me!! BUT I do actually understand a lot!! And I have faith that I will get it through the Lord!!!
Things that are different here....umm....there is a lot to this list and I promise I will add more every week! My apartment is nicer than most here but you in America might be a little scared in it! Let's just say, have you ever seen a cockroach the size of your thumb??? Well, I definitely have...lots of them!!! The first day, I was taking a wonderfully cold shower and two when across my feet!!! :) Then there really are just bugs everywhere...and it's not really the cleanest...but it is like a lot of the places here...and this is supposed to be the nicest area in Indonesia...so with all that being said...that is NOT me complaining!!!! I LOVE it here!!!! I have already fallen completely in love with how different the people are and how it is nothing like what I am used to!!!
Haha and if you are wondering if I am the only white guy here, I am not...I have my companion!!! :) We get stared at all the time because we stick out like a sore thumb!! They all call us "bule" which means "white person". Or they will say to us, "How are you?" and then just laugh like nobodies business because they think it is so funny to speak English to us. There are actually some that know English very well which I am very glad for!!
We have taught four or five lessons and gone to church! I love the members!! They are all so nice to me!! And after church, they all bring food to eat!! Which I think we should start in America!! Some of them speak English and we had a wonderful party this past Saturday because it was Indonesian Independence Day!! So flags everywhere!!! They also have Satay all around here!! It is so good!! Food=win!! We eat from carts all the time because that is just how it is done around here. Also, the food is very hot like hotter than you would believe!!!
Things that made me smile:
1) Friendly Indonesians that want to talk to the white guys! Haha all day every day!!
2) There are CATS everywhere!! I am not kitten you right meow!! Like I see a hundred different stray cats a day!!
things that made me smile:
things that made me smile:
3)Trains and Angkots! We use these to get around. Now you have not experienced a crowded train until you have been on one here...like there is no space and you have your hands in the air!! Then an Angkot is like a car that drives a certain route and it is a tiny little bus thing that always has it's doors open....sketchy!!!!
I really am in Paradise!! Please let everyone know that I am trying to write as fast as I can, but I might have to send letters to them. I read everything that is sent to me, but I don't always have time to respond to all of them.
I love this work!!! Being a missionary is really the best!!! Even when I bike 10 miles a day in the heat!! It still is wonderful!!
I love you all! Even as I sit here on the ground in Indonesia!!
Love,
Elder Troff
Hurrah for Indonesia! for Indonesia HURRAH!!!
